Metals, oil, sand and water: what the Earth provides, what grows back and why using it carefully matters.
What you need first
Take a look around: the metal in your bike, the glass in the window, the concrete in the house, the copper in your charging cable, the water from the tap. Almost everything you use starts as a raw material from the Earth. Metals sit in ores inside rock, coal and oil lie deep underground, sand comes from rivers and pits, and water collects in lakes and groundwater. An ore is simply a rock that holds enough metal to make mining it worthwhile. This topic is about what the Earth provides and how we handle it wisely.
Renewable or finite?
Raw materials can be split into two big groups. Renewable resources grow back or keep renewing themselves: wood grows in the forest, water returns with the rain. Renewable does not mean limitless, though: if more wood is cut than grows back, that supply shrinks too. Finite resources, on the other hand, will run out one day. Coal and oil formed over millions of years. Whatever we burn of them is gone for good as far as we are concerned. Metals and sand do not simply regrow either. Some resources become scarce because the reserves are limited while consumption grows year after year. Even sand is in demand today, because the world needs huge amounts of it for concrete.
Extraction has consequences
Extracting raw materials takes a lot of effort and leaves traces. For ores and coal, mountains are removed and deep pits are dug, and landscapes and habitats disappear. Mining consumes a lot of energy and water, and waste can pollute soils and rivers. That does not mean extraction is always bad, without raw materials there would be no houses, no bikes and no solar panels. But it does mean: every resource we do not waste spares nature something.
Saving and closing the loop
The best answer to scarce resources has two parts. First, be economical: use things for a long time, repair them, share them and buy second hand. Second, recycling: old cans become new aluminium, waste paper becomes new paper, and gold and copper are recovered from old phones. Recycling often saves enormous amounts of energy, new aluminium from old cans needs only about 5 % of the energy that production from ore would cost. The goal is a circular economy in which raw materials are used again and again instead of ending up in the bin. Sorting your waste at home is the first step of this cycle.
